Acne is a skin complaint that most of us dread happening to us, though thankfully only a tiny percentage of people actually do suffer long term from this debilitating, embarrassing, and sometimes facially disfiguring complaint. Though good skin care and paying careful attention to personal hygiene and health means most of us will never suffer the pain of acne, there are other lifestyle changes we can all make to safeguard against ever suffering acne, and many techniques exist to help cure the problem even in its advanced stages. Such as:

1. The skin must be kept clean and oil free to prevent flare ups. Careful cleansing with perfume and oil free cleaners will benefit most acne sufferers. Sweating and overheating can also exacerbate acne and the sufferer should compensate by keeping their body heat low using deodorants and antiperspirants and not getting too close to open fires and radiators and by not wearing several layers of clothing.

2. Acne sufferers keen on sport should shower after participating to prevent sweat and overheating exacerbating their acne.

3. Cotton and other light natural fibres next to the body allow the skin to breath and remain cool, unlike thick man made fibres and heavy fabrics which can cause the body to overheat and become sweaty. Avoid clothes made from lycra or plastic and most synthetic fabrics and nylons which can cause the skin to sweat and cause acne to flare up. Choose loose over tight clothing to prevent sweating and friction on the skin. Wash sports headbands between uses.

4. Use natural cleaners for skin and clothes and avoid any that are heavily perfumed or with high chemical content.

5. Use gloves when washing up and doing housework and avoid heavily perfumed or high chemical content household cleaners and spray.

6. Stress can worsen acne and many sufferers find relief from meditation and gentle exercising such as walking and listening to soothing music.

7. Change all clothing daily and clean sports gear after use and keep clothing in a cool area between uses.

8. Hair should be kept well away from the face where it can cause itching and sweating and worsening existing acne conditions.

9. Avoid thick skin creams and make up which can clog the pores and cause or worsen an acne condition. Oily make up is also known to cause the pores to clog. A light make up or no make up at all is best for acne sufferers. Keep make up and hair brushes spotlessly clean always.

10. Some studies say a diet rich in fat can cause or worsen acne, some studies suggest otherwise. Nonetheless if ‘we are what we eat’ it still makes sense to avoid too much fat and sweet foods in our diet and to drink plenty of fresh water and avoid too much alcohol.

11. Keep personal hygiene permanently in mind and shower at least once a day especially after energetic activity. Sweat causes pores to block which also cause acne to flare up.

12. Wash your hands several times each day and avoid them coming into contact with acne affected areas of your body.

13. Do not pinch or prod affected areas which can force the infection deeper into the skin and cause flare ups and possible scarring.

The Dreaded World Of Facial Acne

Facial Acne is the most disturbing of all acne as it cannot be hidden through clothing or accessories. This type of acne is more commonly observed in women compared to men. The following are the most common types of facial acne:

Blackheads: These are formed when pores become partially blocked allowing excess sebum, which then turns into bacteria and kills the skin cells to slowly drain to the surface. As the name suggest it is black in color and is much difficult to deal with as compared to whiteheads.

Whiteheads: Unlike blackheads they are formed when a pore becomes completely blocked due to excess oil known as sebum. These are white in color and pop up very easily. There are a number of ways to treat whiteheads but poking them can cause scars.

Nodules: they are a number of acne spots, which are larger and painful then normal acne. This acne is very stubborn and is very difficult to treat. They also form large hard bumps under the skin’s surface. Scarring is also a common result of nodule acne, which has a lengthy treatment with the help of a Dermatologist.

Pustules: they are similar to whiteheads but are reddish and are itchier. They form red circle with a white or yellow center.

Papules: they are tender, swollen, red bumps with no head.

Cysts: they appear to be similar to acne nodules but they are a bit different as they are filled with pus and have a diameter of 5mm. These can be very painful especially when they turn into scars.

Treating Acne Without Drugs – Understanding Proper Cleansing and Treatment

In treating acne without drugs, or outside of a doctor’s office, there are three main factors that must be considered: enclosure, sebum (oil), and bacteria. I often find that people trying to rid themselves of acne focus heavily on one or two of the factors, instead of all three. Yet, for those with persistent acne, failure to address all three factors ultimately means failure to correct the problem.

What does this mean? For most people, its fairly simple: you must cleanse and treat.

You’re probably thinking, “yeah, duh, of course.” The fact is, cleansing is not so simple as some think. I often have people say, “I wash my face three times a day! My face is clean!” Unfortunately, cleansing this much or this often causes more harm than good. Over-washing and/or washing with abrasive or harsh chemicals leads to skin irritation, making the perfect environment for bacteria to enter into the skin, mingle with the oil, and produce more acne.

Also, most cleansers do not address the issue of enclosure, where the dead skin cells impact together, trapping bacteria and oil inside. Many people are hesitant to use a facial moisturizer, with the fear that their skin will become more oily and more prone to breakouts. Again, this results in over-irritation to the face, especially when harsh treatment products are being used.

The real issue, then, is cleansing and treating in the right way with the right products. Using a cleanser that contains either alpha-hydroxy acids or, if you would like something more gentle, fruit enzymes, to remove dead skin cells and enter into the pore to rid it of bacteria without over-drying is the paramount first step. Masking to pull impurities, then moisturizing, are next, with products that will reinforce a matte, luminous, and more uniform appearance while healing the skin.

For most people, this means avoiding many over the counter and even prescription products that are so harsh that they actually inflame skin further. Think about it: acne is already an inflammation of the skin, the last thing you want to do is make it worse!

Ultimately, the point for those with persistent acne is to ensure that the skin is clean, but also that products are use which soothe instead of inflame. This small change can make a big difference!

Effective Acne Treatments – Making Your Own!

Choosing effective acne treatments from amongst the plethora of products available today can be a daunting task, and while many skincare specialists advocate the use of gentle products, it can be difficult to find a natural facial cleanser that will effectively cleanse your skin, while attacking the causes of your acne. This is why many people are choosing to make their own natural face cleaner from products in their own kitchen. And these can make effective acne treatments.
It can be difficult to make sense of the complicated sounding ingredients listed on the side of manufactured products, but many of the active properties of these cleansers are introduced by the addition of some of nature’s simplest ingredients. You can recreate your very own effective acne treatments by putting these together in your own natural facial cleaner, making a product that can effectively treat your acne in a natural and gentle way.
A wide variety of natural products can act as effective natural facial cleaners that can be applied to the skin and rinsed away with warm water. The natural astringency of lime juice makes it an excellent base in effective acne treatments – mixed with boiled milk, it makes an effective and soothing facial wash. Mix lime juice with equal amounts of groundnut oil to use as a pre-wash: apply to the skin and leave for ten to fifteen minutes before washing. Mix with rose water and leave on the skin for about twenty minutes, and see how refreshed your skin looks and feels when you rinse with warm water.
Rose water can also be mixed with sandalwood to create an effective acne treatment – simply apply to the face and rinse with water after twenty minutes. Ground orange peel and water can be made into a paste and used in the same way. Natural facial cleaners can even be produced by mixing such strange ingredients as turmeric powder and mint juice; just rinse with water after twenty minutes to see the difference.
As with all new facial products that you use, it is always wise to test a patch of your skin for any potential adverse reactions before applying to your whole face. Rub a small amount of your selected mixture just behind your ear, rinse, and wait twenty-four hours. If you experience any redness or itchy patches, then one of the ingredients might not be right for you.
But don’t be disheartened – just try the next mixture. It could be one of the effective acne treatments you’ve been looking for.
You can often be surprised, but you can sometimes make your own effective acne treatments.

The Truth About Acne Skin Care

Let’s face it, you are engaged in an ongoing battle when you are afflicted with acne. While acne treatments for a mild case of acne are usually successful, moderate acne is a greater problem. Even dermatologists cannot cure a severe case of acne but can only provide an acne treatment regimen.

However, you can support your acne treatment efforts with proper acne skin care in order to reduce the recurrence of acne flare-ups and not aggravate existing acne.

Knowing What You’re Doing

One of the first pieces of advice is to make sure that you understand and follow the directions for any acne remedy that you are using. If you are taking a prescription acne medicine, read the patient leaflet that accompanies the medication carefully. Typically for moderate to severe acne a dermatologist may prescribe several acne medicines, each with its own treatment protocol and directions.

In order to achieve the acne free skin that you desire, it is important to use all the acne treatments properly and in the correct order. Consider bringing a tablet of paper, a pen, and a friend or relative with you to your appointment with your dermatologist. Simply jot down some notes about the order and time of day for applying each acne medicine and what its purpose is.

Remember, just because the acne clears with the use of your acne medicines doesn?’t necessarily mean that you have succeeded in curing acne. Most people with moderate to severe acne must continue to use their acne medicine long-term to prevent any recurrence of their acne problem. Using the acne treatments properly should translate to clear skin and freedom from acne scars.

What About Over-the-Counter Remedies?

Besides using medications prescribed by a doctor, there are a large number of products on the market labeled as skin cleansers, facial cleansers, pore cleansers, and facial pore cleaners that can be used in curing acne.

When cleansing skin that is afflicted with acne, an important point to remember is not to scrub the skin; never scrub your face with a washcloth. It is a misconception that acne is caused by dirt clogging the pores of the skin. You don?’t scrub away the offending dirt; you can?’t scrub away the offensive acne and achieve acne free skin.

Over-washing or scrubbing skin afflicted with acne only serves to aggravate the condition. Rather use only a gentle skin cleanser, lukewarm water, and a gentle motion with your fingertips as your primary acne skin care regime. When you wash your face with your hands, be sure to first thoroughly wash your hands.

Do Natural Treatments Really Work?

Look for gentle cleansers that are sold as acne solutions. When you’re evaluating skin cleansers for acne, include natural acne treatments in your search as well. For example, a soap made from Echinacea and other herbal ingredients is an effective antibiotic facial cleanser that helps fight acne and restore clear skin. Tea tree oil also has known antibiotic properties and serves as a mild anesthetic that will soothe the irritated skin.

Oily skin is implicated as a one of the causes of acne. It doesn?’t necessarily make sense to use a moisturizer on oily skin as a means of achieving clear skin. But many of the acne treatments, whether they are prescribed or available as over-the-counter products, have a tendency to irritate the skin while curing acne.

A moisturizer is a boost to irritated skin and keeps skin from becoming overly dry due to the acne treatments that have been applied. Look for a moisturizer with the following properties:

- oil-free

- won?’t clog pores (non-comodogenic)

- containing a sun-screen

Besides a great desire to just scrub away the acne, many people try to remove the acne pimples by hand as a way to get clear skin. People who are afflicted with acne should avoid touching their face except to gently wash it with mild cleanser as already discussed.

By trying to remove pimples by hand you run the risk of creating acne scars that will last for a lifetime. Instead, have patience and rely on your prescription or over-the-counter acne treatment to work. Acne remedies usually take 6 to 8 weeks before curing acne.

For male acne sufferers, the daily ritual of shaving can be a problem. One acne sufferer has recommended the Gillette Sensor Excel as a gentle and effective razor to use. Other males prefer to try an electric razor. The advice is to shave delicately to avoid nicking the skin and to shave only as often as necessary. Finding a moisturizing shave gel may be one way to enhance your acne skin care program.

Female acne sufferers have their unique problems too, in finding the right cosmetic products to use. Females who are accustomed to using a foundation product may find that the foundation is difficult to apply smoothly if the facial skin becomes irritated due to the acne treatments being applied.

You may have to abandon the use of some cosmetics during the acne treatment period. Be sure to select only oil-free cosmetics and ones that are labeled as non-comodogenic (won?’t clog pores) to use on your road to clear skin.

Proper acne skin care is a necessary addition to your arsenal for fighting your battle with acne and achieving clear skin once again.
